about

While on the road with Okkervil River, Lauren Gurgiolo began composing a set of tunes inspired by Soren Kierkegaard’s "The Seducer’s Diary." Her longtime obsession with the book led to 7 tunes musically influenced by the characteristics of Kierkagarrd's writing with deconstructed lyrics from the story. The music was written specifically for the The Dialtones, a group of talented and accomplished musicians whom Gurgiolo has forged deep creative relationships over the course of several years.

LAUREN GURGIOLO (Okkervil River, Roky Erickson)
KARLA MANZUR (Alejandro Escovedo, Dana Falconberry)
LINDSAY GREENE (Paula Nelson, Elizabeth McQueen)
MICHAEL ST CLAIR (Okkervil River, Polyphonic Spree)
ANDREW GERFERS (The Conrads)

The experience and musicality of these musicians complete the material Gurgiolo has written for her newest work, Calculated Carelessness.

To celebrate the release of the CD, Calculated Carelessness, a special multi-media installation based on the work will run from Thursday, May 2nd to Sunday, May 5th, 2013 at the Museum of Human Achievement in Austin, Texas. The interactive, multi-media installation accompanying Calculated Carelessness promises to immerse audiences in the eerie, dreamlike world of Kierkegaard’s The Seducer's Diary; the text inspiring the work’s sensorially dense moods and themes. Deluged in music, interactive sculpture and projection, this otherworldly event will envelop audiences in an experience created by Austin’s brightest lights in the creative arts.

Tickets for the installation are $5-15 sliding scale and will be available at the door or online: calculatedcarelessness.brownpapertickets.com. All tickets include one Calculated Carelessness limited-edition CD or a download card.

my Johannes
and yet i do call you mine,
my seducer my deceiver my unhappy

I am still yours
love a hundred (others)
I am still yours
flee where you will
I am still yours
I am yours yours
I am your I

i call you mine
and call myself yours
as it once flattered your ear
so now it shall sound as a curse

i am still yours
love a hundred (others)
i am still yours
flee where you will
i am still yours
i am yours yours
i am your i
Track Name: Calculated
tried in vain
too much to resist
contained constructions
calculated

tried in vain
too much to believe
a bad conscience
makes alife interesting

bold thoughts
cold and impassive
but without you say
there's no satisfaction

some hints
erotic
calculated
carelessness

la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la

if I could forget you
if I ceased loving you
prosaic
self -preservation
most enthusedastic
self annihilation

she must learn
to lull
into moods
take these moments
infinite infinitude
infinite infinitude
infinite infinitude
take these moments
infinite infinitude

behind the stage
stands to the latter
through a thin gauze
world of glossamer
not week
too strong
to this world
he did not belong
constantly
running around
reality
lost its power
to insite
he was disarmed
and he knew
and in his knowing
the evil lay

and he knew and in his knowing the evil lay

and he knew and in his knowing the evil lay

and he knew and in his knowing the evil lay

Track Name: Turbulent Sea
this seaward lullaby
lulls me out at tide
the longing
impatient
expectancy

I lie the same way now
pull in the sails
shut the rutter
the longing
and impatient

expectancy
holds me in its arms
the longing
grows quitter
and quitter
and more more
peaceful
it cuddles me
like a child
Track Name: The Letters Cease
slender wrist
broad bosom
pensive head
roguish glance
quiet sadness
questioning brow
beckoning lips
secretive forehead
concealing lashes
deep-fore boding
radiating
graceful step
soft outlines
swelling hips
exuberant spirits
wistful angelic

I am poor you are my riches
dark you are my light
life becomes a myth a bout you

I am nothing
need nothing
I own nothing
want nothing

for I belong
only to you

turn must be made
letters cease now I've left
she will realize
shes been
cheated
I have changed

she is mine
mobilized

and must dis cover
true romance
